Push rods for a musical instrument repair shop

A music instrument repair shop needed replacement push rods that the original maker no longer supplies. We bent a batch from stainless rod.

A brass instrument repair shop in the Triangle came to us for push rods, the thin stainless links that connect a valve lever to the valve on a brass instrument. The original parts are no longer available, and the shop was repairing instruments faster than it could find rods.

The rod is 4 mm stainless with a thread on each end and a bend partway along its length. The thread has to be clean enough to take a small fitting and the bend has to land in the same place on every rod, or the valve action feels different from one instrument to the next.

We started from straight threaded blanks, built a bending jig on the bench so every rod gets the same bend at the same point, and ran the batch. Each rod was checked against the first one before it went in the box.

If you have a part that a manufacturer stopped making, send us a sample or a drawing and we will tell you how we would reproduce it.
